Risk Reduction

The Center for Wellness Promotion uses BASICS as an educational sanction for students referred by the Office of Student Conduct for violation of the university’s alcohol and other drug policies.  Students who receive a Campus Appearance Ticket (CAT) for alcohol and/or drug violations will be required to meet with either the Housing Office or the Dean of Students Office.  These students may be sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion for BASICS sessions.

BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) is a risk reduction program for college students who use alcohol and/or cannabis and have experienced, or are potentially at-risk for, substance-related problems.  BASICS aims to motivate students to reduce substance use in order to decrease the negative consequences of drinking.

Students who are sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion will be required to meet individually with a BASICS facilitator for an initial 15-minute intake appointment, followed by 2 separate one-hour sessions scheduled a couple of weeks apart.  Over the course of these sessions, students will complete alcohol and drug use assessments, discuss their history of substance use, analyze their current use, review alcohol and drug educational information, and identify ways that they may change their substance use behaviors.  Please note that students who present with significant substance use behaviors and concerns during the 15-minute intake session may be referred to substance use counseling appointment(s) with a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist at UNC Charlotte instead of BASICS.

Once a student completes BASICS, the Center for Wellness Promotion will notify the Office of Student Conduct or Housing and Residence Life that the conduct sanction is complete.  Specific information discussed during BASICS sessions is not disclosed - only that the conduct sanction was successfully completed.

If you have any questions or concerns about substance use issues or about the BASICS program, please contact: Darnisha Pulley by phone at 704?687?7407 or by email at dpulley3@charlotte.edu.

Students who are sanctioned to the Center for Wellness Promotion for an alcohol or drug violation should call the Center for Wellness Promotion at 704?687?7407 to schedule an appointment.  If no one answers, please leave a message (including your name and contact information) and our team will return your call.

Yes. A No Show fee of $30.00 per appointment will be applied for each missed appointment. Please reschedule your appointment by 4:00pm the prior day to avoid this fee. If you are more than 15 minutes late for any 1-hour appointment, then you will be responsible for the $30.00 Late Fee. Charges can be paid by cash, check, or credit/debit cards (VISA, MasterCard, or American Express). Your payment can be made at the Student Health Cashier’s Desk. These charges may also be applied to your student account.

Yes! The Center for Wellness Promotion is happy to work with students who are interested in making changes to their use of alcohol or marijuana and who are not referred to our department.  BASICS services are free for students who refer themselves to BASICS.

Students who fail to fully complete all requirements of their Wellness Promotion sanction will have a registration hold placed on their account.  This means that they will not be able to register for classes for the next semester.

If you find that your registration has been blocked, contact the Dean of Students Office at 704?687?6569 to discuss what you must do to have the hold removed.

Occasionally, UNC Charlotte students will receive a state ticket for an alcohol or drug violation.  These are different from Campus Appearance Tickets (CATs) and typically require students to appear in state court.  Students who receive a state ticket often wish to know if they can go through the BASICS program at UNC Charlotte to satisfy court assessment requirements.  The Center for Wellness Promotion CANNOT guarantee that the court system will allow students to go through our program rather than requiring an assessment and classes with an outside agency.  Some students have been allowed to go through our program, others have not been allowed to do so.
